Hurricane Fabric
Hurricane fabric has slowly become more popular storm protection option over the years. It's flexible and can typically cover much larger expanses than standard aluminum or steel shutter styles. There are quite a few recent innovations such as a fabric which uses strands of steel wire as well as kevlar fabric screens. Kevlar has been used in bullet proof vests for years and was a brilliant addition to the hurricane protection product arsenal. The benefit of hurricane fabric is the fact that it absorbs the impact of flying debris extremely well. It is actually designed to have some "give" to it, so it literally slows the impact down.
There are a few things that time has told about hurricane fabric. One being that certain designs are failing because of consistent UV ray exposure. Be sure to do your homework and ask the dealer/manufacturer for an extended warranty that covers UV damage. If they're unable to offer one for their hurricane fabric, be very persistent and find out exactly why. There's no use to having hurricane fabric screens installed when a hurricane is on it's way if their integrity has failed over the years.
Hurricane Fabric Points to Research
- UV-Resistance: Be sure to ask about how the fabric withstands UV rays.
- Anchoring System: Be sure to find out what type of anchors & straps are used with their particular fabric system.
- Transparency: You don't want your home to become a cave. Ask how much light the fabric allows in.
- State / County certified engineering and/or specs.
